About Yucatán
Yucatan is famous for its Spanish colonial architecture found in abundance in cities such as Izamal, Valladolid, and the state capital, Merida. This architecture is much like you would discover in Europe, and Merida is known as The White City for the all-white mansions that line many of its major thoroughfares. These mansions were built at the turn of the twentieth century after an economic boom brought on by the Henequen plant.
Today, the entire state of Yucatan is experiencing a second economic boom. Merida and its coastal surroundings have become a magnet for American and Canadian baby-boomers who are seeking a
higher quality of life at a reasonable price.
This area is ideal for active retirees. The Yucatan coast, which is only 30 minutes away via a four-lane highway, is very similar in appearance to the beaches and waters of Southern Florida, as both are on the Gulf of Mexico. Foreign buyers with an understanding of the state of Yucatan’s value are quickly purchasing these coastal properties.
However, unlike its sister state of Qunitana Roo where Cancun is located, what is most appealing about Yucatan is that it is less touristy and is better-positioned as a relaxing foreign residential community with several signature golf courses, charter fishing, luxurious restaurants, and cultural events.
Yucatan also has the added benefit of being an older, more established state that has been developed over the years by a wealthy, conservative citizenship who have not tolerated crime.
Along with the second-lowest crime rate in all of Mexico, Yucatan has some of the country’s best hospitals (including the largest and most modern hospital south of the border) and a noted university community with high standards for education and culture.
Merida also has plenty of restaurants and shopping, and is home to North American-style shopping malls and familiar franchise outlets like Costco, Wal-mart, Home Depot, Sears, Starbucks. Better yet, you will find shops and restaurants unique to the Yucatan, like Pancho Villa’s in the Centro or Trotters off Paseo de Montejo. For something really special, spend an afternoon with wine and great conversation at the various renovated historical haciendas outside of the city.
While there are numerous personal reasons to be drawn to the Yucatan, there are also many practical ones, including Yucatan’s accessibility to the USA and Canada via daily direct flights from Houston, Miami, and Atlanta to Merida's international airport. In less than a 35 minutes after your arrival, a taxi or shuttle ride can drop you off at your beach home on the coast.
All those who visit Merida absolutely fall in love with it. With its historical Centro that resembles a European city, its parks and colonial mansions, avenues, and most importantly, its kind and inviting people, it is easy to see the great convenience of living on the coast of Yucatan. Merida also has numerous museums, zoos, and cultural events, and often plays host to the international arts and symphony concerts.
Lastly, the natural unique beauty and activity of the state causes visitors to come back year after year to explore the hundreds of Mayan ruins peppered throughout the state. Chichen Itza, recently honored as one of the world’s seven modern marvels, is less than an hour away.
In addition, you can explore the underground river system in the nearby cenotes. Scuba diving, sailing and fishing are the most popular activities available to you in some of the best areas in the Caribbean, called los Alacranes, a group of Caribbean islands located off the Yucatan coast. And let us not forget, you can enjoy the natural beauty while playing golf in the many new signature courses available within a 30-minute drive. You can even pickup some instructive pointers on your game at the only official Jack Nicklaus School of Golf in Mexico.
